THE SAVANNAH BASKETBALL BLOODLINE: THE COACHES WHO HELPED BUILD THE COMPETITOR

CRUSH Magazine | Issue 015 — Expanded Coaching Tribute

Before the high school recognition, before the military basketball courts overseas, and before the world met Mr CRUSH, there were coaches in Savannah investing their time, knowledge, and energy in a young George Ransom Turner III.

The Savannah Sixers had Big Mark, Alameen, and Bobby.

The Savannah Panthers had Cutter.

Savannah Elite had Dougy, Hines, Gordon, and Coleman.

The Savannah Jazz had Cyrus Hunter, Kevin Evans, George Brown, Simon Heyward, and Billy Thompson.

And at Calvary Day School, Jason Shell and Danny Britt became part of the next stage of Mikey’s athletic development.

FIFTEEN COACHES. FIVE PROGRAMS. ONE DEVELOPING ATHLETE.

But this story is much bigger than one player.

These coaches were part of a broader Savannah youth basketball culture that gave young people opportunities to compete, improve, develop relationships, and learn the responsibilities that come with representing a team.

Different gyms.

Different uniforms.

Different coaching personalities.

Different expectations.

And different lessons accumulated over time.

The value of a coach cannot always be measured by a championship banner or a win-loss record.

Sometimes it appears years later in how a former player approaches pressure, prepares for responsibility, works with other people, or refuses to stop improving.

For Mikey, those coaching relationships belong alongside the Jenkins Boys Club, Carver Heights Stallions, PAL’s, Liberty City Vikingz, Project YESS, and the larger network of Savannah community organizations that helped shape his upbringing.

The athletic journey did not begin at Calvary Day.

Calvary was another chapter in a development story already underway.

BEFORE THE PUBLIC SAW THE PLAYER, SAVANNAH’S COACHES WERE HELPING DEVELOP THE PERSON.

And as CRUSH Magazine documents this history, these coaches deserve to be named.

Not reduced to anonymous references to mentorship.

Not forgotten behind the accomplishments of former players.

But recognized as people who contributed to a generation of Savannah athletes.

Because the history of a basketball community belongs to more than the people who scored the points.

It belongs to the people who taught, organized, encouraged, challenged, and showed up.

THE JERSEYS MAY HAVE CHANGED, BUT EVERY COACH BECAME PART OF THE JOURNEY.

RESPECT THE COACHES. REMEMBER THE TEAMS. HONOR THE COMMUNITY.
